Smashing Pumpkins Prepare For Spring/Summer Touring -

taken from sonicnet.com yesterday:

Smashing Pumpkins Prepare For Spring/Summer Touring

A month before the release of their new album, Adore, the Pumpkins are at their Chicago studio rehearsing.
Music News Editor-in-Chief Michael Goldberg reports:

CHICAGO -- The door to Pumpkinland opens. Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan asks who has come knocking. I tell him, and he gestures for me to come inside the warehouse-turned-rehearsal-studio that is the group's base of operations.

"We're a little behind schedule," apologizes Corgan, who is dressed all in black.

Inside, in the front lobby, sit Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy on a slightly frayed green velvet couch, wrapping up an interview with a local reporter. Shutting the front door, Corgan leads me through the lobby and another doorway, into the large rehearsal room. This is where, in a few hours, the Pumpkins will feel their way through a lengthy set packed with songs off their daring new album, Adore (June 2), as they prepare for an upcoming European tour and a "rumored" local club date. The set list also includes older work from previous albums including, of course, their 1995 smash, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. And at least one unexpected cover, the Band's "This Wheel's On Fire."

"We've done the arena-rock thing, it's just time to do something different for a while." -- Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins leader

This time, when they hit the road, the Pumpkins will be showcasing a new sound. Adore, which clocks in at over 72 minutes in length, is a radical, wildly adventurous album. Corgan has set timeless melodies to music that, for the most part, sounds like it is the work of soulful aliens. With the exception of the acoustic guitar that opens the first track, "To Sheila," and the piano that dominates a few tracks, there is hardly a conventional sound on the album. Instead, drum machines, samples, treated drums, treated samples, synths and all manner of odd noises have been used to create an intensely intimate, powerfully revealing work.

Guitars, traditionally a mainstay of the group's old sound, are practically nonexistent. You'd perhaps expect guitarist Iha to have a problem with that. He doesn't. When I join the threesome in the lobby and ask about the sound of the Adore material, it is Iha who answers first, almost playfully.

"Well, kick out one drummer, take out the guitars," he says, looking over at me through a pair of plastic-framed glasses.

"Get another drummer," D'Arcy says. "Kick him out. Get another drummer."

"Add some keyboards," Iha says.

"Play some lame-ass tunes," laughs Corgan. "And that's it!"

The rehearsal studio is a hive of activity. Pumpkins crew members are fussing with electronic equipment, conversing on cell phones, eyeballing faxes that are coming in from the group's New York-based management office. "First it was just one keyboard," says the group's tour manager ("He's really much, much more than that," says the group's publicist, Gayle Fine. "He's Mr. Everything."), who goes by the name Gooch, as he takes a seat behind touring keyboardist Mike Garson's bank of synthesizers. "Now look at them all."

"I guess it had some babies," cracks another crew member.

But the keyboards pale in comparison to the guitars. I stop counting at 40 guitar cases. And that doesn't include the two sitting open on the floor, each containing a shiny Hamer brand guitar. Guitar racks are filled with all makes and models: lots of Fender Strats and a Gibson SG, an old Danelectro and a Gibson Les Paul Jr. Marshall amps seem to be everywhere. In the very center of the room is a music stand. It is from this spot that Corgan leads the band through their paces.

From all accounts, tour rehearsals having been going well. "Smooth," says Stephen Hodges, a percussionist who has worked with Tom Waits. Hodges seems excited to be hitting the road with the Pumpkins. "Smooth" is how he describes the sessions; "evolving" is his take on the live sound of the studio-crafted Adore material.

Hodges says Corgan quickly realized that the loops and samples that work so well on the album aren't exciting enough for live performance. "So there are three percussionists," Hodges says.

In addition to Hodges, drummer Kenny Aronoff (known for his work with John Cougar Mellencamp and John Fogerty) and Garson (who has worked with David Bowie and Trent Reznor), the Pumpkins have enlisted multi-instrumentalist Lisa Germano (a solo artist who once played fiddle in Mellencamp's band) and percussionist Dan Morris.

"I think of us as the flying wedge," Hodges says of the percussion trio. "Kenny is the point of the flying wedge."

Hodges, who is getting ready for the afternoon rehearsal as he chats, says that during the first few rehearsals, Corgan was not bashful about indicating what he liked and what he didn't like. The head Pumpkin was looking to capture some of the powerful mood and feel of Adore.

"He told us what worked," Hodges says. "So you find an area to work in that he likes, and then you work in that area, finding ways to bring things out in the songs.

"We've got everything from a Glockenspiel to congas," he adds, gesturing to his percussion set-up.

Taking the ethereal, late-night sound of Adore, which Corgan has accurately described as "arcane night music," to the stage should be quite a feat. But rather than try to re-create the exact sounds that are on the album, the touring ensemble will be going for the feel, finding ways to convey the emotional resonance of the material.

Love, loss and faith are themes that dominate the new album, returning in song after song. But they are articulated in a very personal way. "You make me real," Corgan sings in the beautiful album opener, "To Sheila." "You make me real/ Strong as I feel/ You make me real."

Later in that same song, he reveals: "Lately I just can't seem to believe/ Discard my friends to change the scenery/ It meant the world to hold a bruising faith/ But now it's just a matter of grace."

While many of the songs are slow and moody, the Pumpkins do up the tempo with the first single, "Ava Adore," which features Matt Walker's industrial drums and, at times, a wall of noise. Priceless lyric: "Lovely girl you're the murder in my world/ Dressing coffins for the souls I've left behind."

"Tear" features an exotic, Zeppelin-style orchestrated sound. "Tear me apart/ Tear me apart from you," Corgan cries out to -- whom? -- a departed lover, a dead lover? "Where is your heart?/ Where has your heart run to?"

In "Appels and Oranjes" (renamed once Corgan remembered there was an early Pink Floyd song called "Apples and Oranges"), Corgan raises the stakes further, asking what would one do if all the most fundamental things that we take for granted could no longer be taken for granted. "What if the sun refused to shine?/ What if the clouds refused to rain?... What if, what is isn't true/ What are you going to do?"

This is heavy, personal stuff. Clearly, Corgan, now at the beginning of his 30s, has grown up, and with Adore, he's delving into some of life's strongest mysteries.

This is a far cry from songs like "Jellybelly" ("We're nowhere, we're nowhere, we're nowhere to be.../ living makes me sick") on Mellon Collie . As Corgan says, "I'm not just speaking to a teen-age heart anymore."

With the album completed, the group is focused on making sure that the world knows about it. After a "rumored" club warm-up date (see related story in May 1 SonicNet Music News), they head off on a 17-date European tour that will find them playing such unconventional locations as the Botanical Gardens in Belgium, the recently opened Guggenheim Art Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark.

And what, exactly, has prompted the group to play such unusual venues?

"I just wanna have fun," D'Arcy says.

"Just fun," agrees Corgan. "We're trying to take the corporate, hyped-up overload thing out of it for a while so we can just play."

"When you tour Europe -- whenever your tour anywhere -- everyone goes to the same places," D'Arcy explains. "These are the places where a rock band plays ... You go to the same places ... It's not interesting. It's a grind; it's a drag. Maybe the first time you go over you're excited, but after that it's just the same, the same and more of the same. We've never been to a lot of these places before."

"We're just trying to change the context in which we play," Corgan adds. "That's the best way to put it."

"Play different kinds of venues," D'Arcy says. "Breathe some life into it."

"We've done the arena-rock thing, it's just time to do something different for a while," Corgan says. "It's a different album, so it just seems like, would you go out and do the same thing?"

The Pumpkins say they're indulging themselves with the European tour. "Absolutely," Corgan says.

" 'Cause we're sure not making any money," D'Arcy says. Then she laughs.

Pumpkins Tap Ex-Mellencamp Violinist For Tour -

Taken from Sonicnet.com:

Pumpkins Tap Ex-Mellencamp Violinist For Tour

Expanded Pumpkins touring band will include a keyboardist, percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Lisa Germano.

Staff Writer Chris Nelson reports:

When the Smashing Pumpkins hit the road this summer, their band will include one-time John Mellencamp fiddle player Lisa Germano and two or three additional musicians, including a keyboardist and a percussionist, according to a source close to the band.

Earlier this month, the alt-rock superstars confirmed that they had hired former Mellencamp skinsman Kenny Aronoff to keep the beat on their summer tour in support of the forthcoming Adore (June 2) album. Now the Chicago-based group has tapped additional side-players Germano along with several thus-far unidentified musicians to join the Pumpkins on the tour as well.

"Lisa will be a multi-instrumentalist," said Gayle Fine, spokesperson for the Pumpkins, noting that, in addition to violin, Germano may also play guitar and keyboards with the band.

The Pumpkins are currently ensconced in a Chicago rehearsal space preparing for the outing, which, beginning in May, will take them through Europe, Australia and Japan before they return to the United States in July. The band will then join the H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons Of Rock Developing Everywhere) tour for a handful of dates.

Fine could not say whether the Smashing Pumpkins enlisted Germano through their newly forged relationship with Aronoff. In addition to playing with Germano in Mellencamp's band, Aronoff has also performed on tracks from all four of Germano's solo albums, beginning with On The Way Down From Moon Palace (1991).

Germano hooked up with Mellencamp in the late 1980s, lending her violin to the heartland singer's Lonesome Jubilee (1987), Big Daddy (1989) and Human Wheels albums and later contributing to vocals to Dance Naked.

With Moon Palace, released independently, Germano extended her country and folk roots. Her subsequent albums -- including the most recent, Excerpts From A Love Circus (1996) -- have explored darker territory than her earlier work. Last year, she joined epic abstractionists Giant Sand for the Slush album, recorded under the name OP8.

Adore track listing from MTV.com -

MTV online claims to have the official track listing for Adore:

Smashing Pumpkins Set Release Date, Track Listing for Adore

Smashing Pumpkins have set a release date and a track listing for what looks to be one of the most anticipated albums of 1998.

The band's follow-up to "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," which will be titled "Adore," will arrive on June 2, and will carry 15 new songs the band recorded in Los Angeles and Chicago.

Many have speculated about the sound the band will unveil when "Adore" arrives, but Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan told MTV News in February, "I think people are going to be surprised by the kind of reversal in a lot of ways, but the people that say it's acoustic will be wrong. the people that say it's electronic will be wrong. The people that say it's a Pumpkins' record will be wrong. I will try to make something that is indescribable."

While the sound may be a surprise, the track listing no longer is. Here's a look at the songs you'll find when "Adore" arrives:

1. "To Sheila"
2. "Ava Adore"
3. "Perfect"
4. "Daphne Descends"
5. "Once Upon a Time"
6. "Tear"
7. "Crestfallen"
8. "Appels + Oranjes"
9. "Pug"
10. "The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete"
11. "Annie-Dog"
12. "Shame"
13. "Behold! The Night Mare"
14. "For Martha"
15. "Blank Page"

Billy Corgan Going Solo -

Billy Corgan is working on a Solo Acoustic Project. He has recorded many songs over the years and is finally starting to piece them together for an album. This will not be released for many months though, due to the new album, "Adore".

No Ava Adora, but some Radio Stations have it. -

After talikng to Alan Cross from my local Alternative 102.1 the edge, he told me that they have the Ava Adora radio single and he has personaly heard it and i quote him as saying:

"It's a mid-to-uptempo guitar track similar in feel and style to "Eye" and "The End is the Beginning" but with a cool-sounding drum loop instead of a real drummer. It's going to be big."

From I've learned from the Music director their, they have it but can't play it due to legal reasons imposed by Virgin. The reason they can't play it is because the album Adore is delayed 1 week, that means everthing else is delayed 1 week, the video, the single on cd and the single on the radio. Also I've recieved a few e-mails confirming this, WBCN - 104.1 BOSTON and Q101 in Chicago. Q101 in Chicago played the single once but recieved a "seize and dismiss" order to stop playing it for a few days. I think they will start playing it in a week or less, we'll just have to be patient.
As for the video I speculate that it will be out in 1-2 weeks.

Daul Show -

I recieved this e-mail about Billy and the Daul Show.

I was sitting eating my dinner and my mom had the Steve daul show on and as I was about to leave some guy started saying how he met Billy in a Bar yesterday. He said Billy was looking good and healthy and that Billy was a Big fan of the Daul show and to have Dauls people call him to set up a meeting. He also went on saying that Billy would kick off the tour of their new album at the Double Door!!! This must mean that rumored show is true!!

Ava Adora on the radio -

I've been hearing reports that radio stations have started playing the single early even though it's not supposed to be on the air till Monday April 27th. From what these people are saying is that it's not acoustic or totaly electronic. If these reports are true it will be an interesting Monday for us Smashing Pumpkins fans. If anyone has a chance to record it please
send me the file as a .mp3 or realaudio(.mp3 prefered).

Possible Reason for Adore Delay -

I've recieved reports as to why Adore was delayed. Adore was delayed due to the fact they are adding tracks from the Chicago 97 sessions, a lot of stuff has been added everywhere. This again is a rumor and is not the official reason.

Post on A.M.S-P regarding new touring keyboardist -

The following post appeared on the alt.music.smash-pumpkins newsgroup. Is this true or just someone pulling our chain? ... Your guess is as good as mine, but it an interesting bit of news if it is true. Here's the post:

SP's new touring keyboard player is Mike Garson, who has been playing with David Bowie the last couple of years. If you have the video of Billy at DB's birthday concert, you can see who I'm talking about. How do I know this, you ask? Well, Mike's my godfather, and he just called me today and told me.

The Pumpkins have been rehearsing at Pumpkinland studio in Chicago since this Monday (they may have been before then but that's when Mike got there). Some of the songs they have been working on are "1979," "Thru the Eyes of Ruby," "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," "To Sheila," "For Martha," "Crestfallen," and "Blank Page." They are working on most of the new album these are just the songs he mentioned off the top of his head.

They will rehearse for a couple more weeks before they start the tour, which will last about 4 months. The European tour starts May 10, and they will come back to the US (LA to be exact) on June 25. They don't have tour dates confirmed there that's just where they're going to be for a few days.

This is all I know so far, I'll keep you guys posted if he finds out anything else.

Confirmation of this post's information will appear on this page as soon at it becomes available.

European Tour; Adore track titles -

information taken from Sonicnet.com:

Smashing Pumpkins to Rock European Gardens, Museums

Alt-rock favorites to take unconventional approach to promote new album

Never ones to be bogged down by convention, the Smashing Pumpkins will embark on a most unusual promotional tour of Europe in mid-May, with performances at a number of unconventional venues, including gardens, museums and record store rooftops.

The European trip is intended to draw attention to the June 2 release of the superstar rock band's new album, Adore, their first collection of new material since 1995's highly acclaimed multi-platinum two-CD effort, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Former John Mellencamp sideman Kenny Aronoff is on-board as the group's touring drummer.

"Any band can go to Europe and play regular shows," Pumpkins publicist Gayle Fine said of the promotional swing, which will continue into June. "At this point, it brings more excitement to fans and to the show for [the group] to play these unusual venues."

Fine revealed that the Botanical Gardens in Belgium, the recently opened Guggenheim Art Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark, are among the landmarks on the concert itinerary. No specific dates for these shows have been announced at this point.

"Many of these are not in the kinds of venues you would normally see a band of the Pumpkins' stature playing," Fine said, "or any band for that matter."

The 17-date Euro-trek will find the band visiting England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and Ireland before moving on to Australia and Japan and returning to the U.S. for concerts in July. One stop in France should be particularly hectic, with the band playing on a television show, performing a short gig on a record store rooftop and ending the day with a traditional evening gig, Fine said. In addition, the band will appear at the Rock Am Ring festival in Germany on May 29 and the Pink Pop festival in Holland on June 1. The Pumpkins will also tour briefly with the H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) festival for five or more U.S. dates in July.

Originally intended for release on May 26, Adore was produced by Pumpkins leader Corgan with six tracks co-produced by Brad Wood (Liz Phair, Veruca Salt). The album, mixed by Flood (Depeche Mode, U2), was recorded in Chicago, the band's hometown, and Los Angeles during late 1997 and early 1998.

It's the first full-length studio effort from the Pumpkins that doesn't feature original drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, who was ousted from the group following the July 1996 drug-related death of touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin. Aronoff didn't contribute his talents to the new album, but the record does boast percussion work from a trio of fine musicians: recently announced Pearl Jam tour drummer Matt Cameron (formerly of Soundgarden) on one track; ex-Pumpkins tour drummer Matt Walker (formerly of Filter) on seven tracks; and Beck drummer Joey Waronker on four tracks.

A drum machine was also used on various tracks and additional drum programming was provided by ex-Nitzer Ebb frontman Bon Harris on eight songs.

Adore includes the songs: "To Sheila," "Ava Adore," "Perfect," "Daphne Descends," "Once Upon a Time," "Tear," "Crestfallen," "Appels + Oranjes," "Pug," "The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete," "Annie-Dog," "Shame," "Behold! The Night Mare," "For Martha," "Blank Page" and "17."

Smashing Pumpkins Join H.O.R.D.E -

information taken from MTV.com:

Smashing Pumpkins, Paula Cole, Marcy Playground, Fastball Join H.O.R.D.E.

Smashing Pumpkins, Paula Cole, Marcy Playground, and Fastball have been added to a H.O.R.D.E. festival line-up that already includes Blues Traveler, Ben Harper, Alana Davis and others.

With Lollapalooza out of commission this summer, H.O.R.D.E. founder John Popper had more room to maneuver in signing on bands for this summer's outing. The Blues Traveler frontman seems to have followed the trend that he began last summer when his festival moved away from the earthy love-in it had been to more of a straight ahead alternative showcase with acts like Beck, Soul Coughing, Ben Folds Five and others on board.

This year's tour gets underway on July 9 at River's Edge in Somerset, Wisconsin and wraps up on September 5 in Portland, Oregon.

Blues Traveler will be joined for at least five July dates by Smashing Pumpkins, and later in the tour by Paula Cole for a three week stretch. Fastball will hop on the tour sometime in August. H.O.R.D.E.'s main stage will also feature singer/songwriter Ben Harper, Canadian favorites Barenaked Ladies, and jazz-influenced vocalist Alana Davis.

The tour's second stage will feature turns by Marcy Playground, Robert Bradley's Backwater Surprise, and Chris Stills, son of 60s songwriter Stephen Stills. David Garza, Fiji Mariners, Emmet Swimming, Agents Of Good Roots, and Getaway People will also be among the acts playing the tour's second stage.

Tickets go on sale Friday for a show in Bonner Springs, Kansas, and on Saturday tickets will be available for shows in Oklahoma City; Noblesville, Indiana; Clarkston, Michigan; Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Burgettstown, Pennsylvania; Canadaigua, New York; and Boston.

Some SP News from France -

I recieved this e-mail from
Denis Bourdon, saying that he has some news. You can read his e-mail:

Hi!

I'm a French SP fan (excuse my poor English-speaking...) and I congratulate you for your site. I'm very interested in the new LP and I have just phoned the French record company (Delabel), and I got some great news, sorry it only concerns France... but you may be interested:
- they will appear in a TV programm called "Nulle Part Ailleurs" on Canal+ on May 18th during Cannes movies' festival.
- they'll play in "le Palais des Sports" in Paris on June 4th - they'll be the opening band just for once on the tour for the Rolling Stones on June 5th that's for the tour.
The single will be broadcast on radio on the 27th of this month, "Ava Adore" will be released on May 4th but "Adore" may be delayed about one week, but it's not sure.
This is absolutely official.

The French "producer" (I don't know how to call her) told me the album is a real killer one, but she couldn't tell me more about foreign countries, sorry about that.

Adore delayed according to http://www.cdworld.com/ -

http://www.cdworld.com/ is reporting that Adore will be available on June 2, 1998 and Ava Adora will be available on May 26. You can buy it now on pre-order, Adore is $17.97 and Ava Adora is $12.99.
What we really need is a confirmation from Virgin Records itself as to if it's delayed and why?

Billy Corgan Biography Book Deal -

Billy's friends Marilyn Manson, Dennis Rodman, and Courtney Love have done it. So Billy Corgan has been asked to write his biography about his life. The publishing company Regan Books has offered to Billy publish his book. At this time, we do not know if Billy Corgan has accepted or rejected the book deal, but it is a large sum of money to pass up, we'll see what happens.

I've just been informed that Billy had already started writing one, but scrapped the idea because he thought that writing a tell all grunge book was a few years too late and the music scene has some what changed. But who knows?

Adore Delayed??? -

I'm getting conflicting reports from people that Adore may be delayed till June 2, 1998. Can any one confirm this?
I've talked to many radio stations and music stores and most don't know when it's coming out or they say in May so I'm guessing that the release dates are not set in gold yet and may be subject to change.

Virgin Records Sweden now reports that the single will be released on May 11th instead of May 4th.

http://southlandcd.com -

http://southlandcd.com is now selling Ava Adora for pre-order at $6.

SPIN Top 40 -

SPIN to Announce the 1998 'SPIN Top 40' in May Issue

NEW YORK, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- SPIN, the nation's leading music and youth culture magazine, will present the second edition of its annual ``SPIN Top 40,'' a photographic portfolio of the most vital artists in music today, in its May issue (on newsstands April 15th).

Featuring the triple-threat of cover subjects folk-rocker Ani DiFranco (#9), rapper Missy ``Misdemeanor'' Elliott (#3), and Radiohead's Thom Yorke (#2), the SPIN Top 40 ranks the artists who will lead rock 'n' roll into the next century, as captured by a bevy of today's most notable photographers.

Beck takes the #1 slot in the list, as ``cover-leaping, poll-sweeping, chart-hopping, Grammy-copping proof that you can be weird, cool, brainy, and popular, all at the same time.'' And though he sits blond and pretty in the top spot, Beck denies jokes that he's the long-lost fourth Hanson brother. ``I ain't riding around in the seat of that Hansonmobile,'' he says. ``I'm not even in the sidecar. I'm in the tow truck.''

The Pumpkins last year were in second place but now have slipped to 18th. After the new album and the following album in 1999 the Pumpkins will probably get back up again and even might get first place, that would be cool.

New Touring Drummer! -

Drummer Aronoff (far right) tells students
that he won job by working out a new tune
with Smashing Pumpkins in the studio.

Ex-John Fogerty Drummer To Tour With Pumpkins

Rock veteran Kenny Aronoff set to fill the post for upcoming tour in support of Adore.

Correspondent David Thomas reports:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- When the students in Professor Glenn Gass' rock-history class at Indiana University arrived for class Monday, little did they know that they'd be getting a special lesson from the newest touring drummer for Smashing Pumpkins, veteran rocker Kenny Aronoff.

The subject: his plans to tour with the mega-successful rock band to support its forthcoming album, Adore.

Seated in the large lecture hall at the university, senior Ryan Brown said he was shocked and thrilled to hear that former Indiana University professor Aronoff would take over the backbeats for the Pumpkins.

"It will be cool to see him open up a whole new bag of tricks with the Pumpkins," said Brown, a friend of Aronoff's. "I was really surprised when I heard the news."

Aronoff, who was not scheduled to guest lecture the class, made the surprise appearance and announcement to more than 200 students in the hall. He told the class that he had recently taken a new job as the touring drummer for the Smashing Pumpkins and proceeded to lay out some of what went into winning the position, Brown said.

"I won the audition as the new Pumpkins drummer," Aronoff later told SonicNet Music News.

"Personally, I think the Smashing Pumpkins are one of the best American rock bands today," Rock and Roll History professor Gass said. "I admire him for doing it. It takes a lot of guts. There's a lot of room for Kenny to experiment with his music."

Best known for his years providing the backbeat for Bloomington's own rock hero John Mellencamp, Aronoff, who is in his 40s, recorded the legendary Scarecrow album with Mellencamp but has also played on countless other albums from some of rock 'n' roll's most elite members, including a stint in 1997 playing behind Creedence Clearwater Revival leader John Fogerty on tour. Folk-rock legend Bob Dylan, folk songstress Jewel and pop diva Celine Dion are all on Aronoff's long resume.

A source close to the Pumpkins confirmed that Aronoff will be the "touring drummer" for the Chicago-based band for its upcoming two-month promotional tour. The band is scheduled to release its fourth studio album, Adore, late next month.

Known for his straight-ahead rock style, Aronoff will be joining a band that has been instrumental in advancing the modern rock sound with a focus on blending potent pop melody and dynamic arrangements. "On paper, it's weird," Gass said, adding that Aronoff said he had turned down a tour with Fogerty to take the Pumpkins job.

But Aronoff's former students also said they understand the band's decision to recruit a veteran to fill the position left vacant by the group's original drummer, Jimmy Chamberlain. "He can fit in with any band," said Brent England, a percussion major at the school. "He's the best."

Aronoff left his teaching post at Indiana University's School of Music last year. Aronoff told Gass' class that he had auditioned for the Smashing Pumpkins in Los Angeles and won the part by working with the band on an "unplanned, improvisational number that kept getting better" as the rehearsal continued. "[Aronoff] lifts up any band he's in," Gass said. "It's definitely a surprise, but only in a good way."

The Smashing Pumpkins' drummer troubles started in 1996, in the middle of their two-year tour supporting the mega-successful double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, when Chamberlain was dismissed for drug problems after their touring keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin, died of an overdose. Matt Walker, formerly of Filter, was recruited to replace Chamberlain as a touring drummer. However, the Pumpkins recorded their latest album without a permanent drummer, using drum machines on a majority of the tracks.

Aronoff has several weeks to learn the new material for the summer tour in support of Adore; the tour has not yet been officially announced. "Aronoff is the quickest learn in the business," Gass said.

James Iha Interview -

Smashing Pumpkins guitarist and solo artist in his own right talks Simpsons, Courtney, and an alternative career as a bike courier in a frog costume at Blockbuster video. Possibly.

I: Does releasing a solo album mean you feel frustrated in Smashing Pumpkins?

J: "It's a reaction to a lot of the touring. We were touring from January ' 96 to February '97, which is a lot of shows, and every night we'd play really long sets with a lot of distortion and heavy drums. It's hard for me to go back to my hotel room after that and break out the fuzzbox. So I tended to write with an acoustic a lot and these were the songs that came out of it."

I: Do you ever feel like Kim Deal to Billy Corgan's Black Francis?

J: "Yeah, generally I write or co-write about three songs per record, and I do feel constrained, but at the same time I don't really expect to have 11 of my songs on the next Pumpkins record, because it'd just be, like, 'What?' The fans expect Billy's voice and his style of writing. Have we become a corporate entity? I wouldn't say that. I feel like the record I've made is very personal and, for want of a better word, James-like, and I think it's better that it's a solo record than that we change the band's whole production and writing."

I: Are any of the songs on the album about your relationship with D'arcy?

J: "Er… no comment."

I: Are any of the songs about your dog, Bugg?

J: "[Laughs incredulously] No! I made this kind of New Order-y songs that's on 'Veiwphoria' [Pumpkins video anthology] that goes [sings in eerie falsetto] "Buuuug". It's really bad."

I: What's the best joke Billy Corgan's ever told you?

J: "Er [interminable pause]. He's actually very funny, but I don't really think we tell a lot of jokes. We do impersonations, and fictional re-creation of events, but nothing you'd really call jokes. I do impressions of Yoda, Worf off Star Trek, Nicolas Cage's character in Peggy Sue Got Married."

I: Did you get to meet the cast when in The Simpsons (the 'Homerpalooza' episode)?

J: "No, they had this stand-in Homer. We just went into this studio where they had four mics set up, and we said each of our four lines three times and the stand-in Homer responded. But when you're saying stuff like 'Let's all go out and buy fur coats!', it's pretty funny anyway."

I: Are you convinced by Courtney Love's transformation?

J: "[Uneasily] It's not really for me to say. I just saw The People Vs Larry Flynt for the first time the other day, she was very good in it. She' s nice, we always tended to get along. I haven't seen her in a while."

I: You seem very positive about relationships. Are you one of those annoying people who've never been chucked?

J: "Not really. I never really had a girlfriend until I was 19, so I've had my share of weird relationships."

I: Is it difficult to maintain relationships when you're in a band as successful as The Smashing Pumpkins?

J: "yeah, especially when you're touring. When the other person has their own career it's really difficult to meet up. I'm not trying to romanticize it, you get used to it. [Wistfully] I do sometime wonder what it would be like to have a 9 to five job, though. I was in art school, so I'd maybe be a fine artist. When I was a kid I used to go round on my bike picking up films but I can't see myself as a professional film canister express driver."

I: Did you have a nickname at school?

J: "I have this friend in LA who calls me Jumpstaedy James. Did I get called James Yee-ha? Well sure but it's not something I remember fondly."

I: Do you think up your hairstyles yourself, and have you ever been tempted to go for an ironic mullet?

J: "I go to this place in New York and I just say 'Long' or 'Short'. I had the Mrs. Robinson streeks for a while. I had a version of the mullet. I had a David Bowie shag and that was kinda getting towards a mullet."

I: We think all people in America have mullets because of The Ricki Lake Show.

J: "It's not far from the truth. America is so big, and we play a lot of middle-America venues in small towns, only about 9000-seaters, and you go out and see the audience and there's a fair few mullets out there."

I: What was the last fancy-dress costume you wore?

J: "For the last video we rented these '20s-style outfits, and I had a suit for a man. I don't think I've ever been to a fancy-dress party, though. I would like to go to a costume ball. I think I'd go as a frog. A rather dapper frog."

I: Did you watch any of the Winter Olympics?

J: "I watched some of the downhill skiing, that was quite exciting. I'm not a downhill skier myself, but I appreciate their skills. I'm sure if I so much as tried to put on a ski I'd break my knee or something. Women's curling? No, I didn't see that, unfortunately."

I: Will you be rooting for the US in the World Cup?

J: "Me? Oh sure, in the good ship Iha. Well, y'know, I wish all the teams well. I'm not really a soccer fan. I see it on the TV but I tend to be playing my guitar at the same time. I only tend to watch TV properly if I've rented a video."

I: What was the last film you cried at?

J: "I was on tour and I watched Braveheart, and when they cut his wife's throat I just thought [sighs dramatically] 'Oh the humanity!' I saw it again and I cried again at the same part. I've gotta get out more."

I: What is the sound of one hand clapping?

J: "the sound? I can't think of a joke… I guess it sounds like a banana. I was directing some friends to a Blockbuster video one time, and I was like, 'Take the corner and then go straight ahead, straight as a banana.' They found it alright."

New Drummer Rumors Again -

Is drummer Stacy Jones (of Veruca Salt and Letters to Cleo fame) auditioning for the Smashing Pumpkins' vacant drum slot? According to Kay Hanley, lead singer of Letters to Cleo, that seems to be the case. At a recent Letters to Cleo show, Hanley said something -- onstage -- to the effect of his trying out for Billy Corgan & Company. However, a spokesperson for the Pumpkins couldn't confirm or deny the report. As previously reported, the Pumpkins' forthcoming album, Adore, features the drum work of three skinsmen -- Matt Walker, Matt Cameron, and Joey Waronker -- but the band has yet to hire a permanent player behind the kit for their forthcoming six- to eight- week tour, which is tentatively slated to include many European dates...

James Iha Concert Review -

James Iha (Metro's Top Note Theatre, Chicago; 100 capacity; $12)

By Jae-Ha Kim

CHICAGO (Variety) - Covering a little known Eric Anderson number near
the end of his 50-minute solo set, Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha sang,
"I'd love to sing my ballad/But they only wanna hear me rock 'n' roll."
Not after this show.
The shy musician's ballad-heavy solo debut was a stunner.

And Chicago's intimate Top Note Theatre -- a part of Metro, the club
that gave the first big break to the Pumpkins -- was the perfect setting
for Iha's laid-back performance in front of a hometown crowd
that included Pumpkins bassist D'Arcy, members of the Frogs and
his parents.

Walking onstage in dark jeans and a black shirt, Iha appeared
apprehensive as he kicked off his
13-song set with his beguiling single "Be Strong Now." Backed by a
tight four-piece band, Iha
focused on caressing each syllable, leaving the solo work to the
nimble-fingered Neal Casal.

Like Matthew Sweet and Steve Poltz, Iha is a deft storyteller who
draws in listeners with his smooth, wistful delivery.
"You'll have to pardon my ballads," he said. "I write many, and they're all sad."
Fortunately, he wears sad well.

Though Iha had performed four songs opening for Pumpkins frontman
Billy Corgan at L.A.'s Viper Room this year,
he said backstage that that wasn't really a show:
it was so short that it was like performing on the radio.
Iha's only other solo date in support of his debut album, "Let It Come Down,"
was Tuesday at New York's Mercury Lounge.

Presented inhouse. Band: James Iha, Matt Walker, Solomon Snyder, Neal Casal, John Ginty.
